This portrait was created
for a play I directed
by Aspazija.
I’m dressed as her lookalike.
I've just published Bruno Slept Here, a novel based on my teenage father. Growing up in Nazi-occupied Riga, Bruno Rubess belonged to a clandestine yoga salon whose teachings went beyond headstands to include astral projection.
In the last months of WWII, Bruno was forced into the uniform of the occupying Nazis and was catapulted into the battlefields. Lost in the smoke, his mantra became the only shield from carnage.
He’d mouth the mantra silently on their endless marches but lost count when the Fritzes shouted at them, which was always.
Bruno’s POW camp is now a nature reserve.
My guide says, “I know which Cage your father was in, and I even know his pseudonym.”
